Spurs Sports and Entertainment and the STEER Partner to educate Students about the importance of the Oil and Gas Industry
Spurring Energy Education Day brought 1,000 students to the AT&T Center
San Antonio (April 4, 2016) – The South Texas Energy & Economic Roundtable (STEER) partnered with the San Antonio Spurs, HOLT CAT and SHALE Magazine on Friday, April 1, for a one-day oil and gas education program. One thousand students attended the Spurring Energy Education Day event at the AT&T Center which showcased the oil and gas industry and career opportunities available upon graduation from high school or college.
Middle school and high school students from San Antonio and throughout South Texas with a desire to learn more about STEM careers or are interested in the oil and gas industry were invited to participate. The day was filled with fun and educational activities to inform the future workforce about the many opportunities that await them upon graduation.
“Developing a skilled and educated workforce for the future is integral to the continued advancement of the oil and gas industry, and a top priority for STEER,” said Omar Garcia, President and CEO of the organization. “We are committed to partnering with other like-minded community leaders, like the Spurs, to provide students with hands-on lessons about industry processes, including production engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, health, safety and environment, land management, and a host of other professions.”
The Spurring Energy Education Day provided students with an explanation of the process of drilling and producing oil and gas, offered interactive quizzes and games, and demonstrated the ways that oil and gas is vital to our everyday lives. Students were informed of the various careers related to science, technology, engineering and math as well as the many opportunities that are available beyond STEM fields.
“We are grateful to STEER and Spurs Sports and Entertainment for providing our students with this unique and educational experience,” said Nancy Dunn Thompson, Ph.D., Director of Community Outreach and Communications for the School of Science and Technology. “Our students walked away with a new understanding of the importance of oil and gas in their everyday lives and an appreciation for the work and processes that bring energy into our homes.”
Companies offering educational opportunities to students at the Spurring Education Energy Day include: Anadarko, ConocoPhillips, Encana, EOG, Halliburton, Howard Energy, Marathon Oil, Noble Energy, Pioneer Natural Resources, Schlumberger and Statoil.
